Polymer sand is far superior to standard paving sand because it contains binding agents that lock the sand particles together when exposed to water. Thanks to this vital quality, polymer sand offers five amazing benefits:
- It improves the durability of your hardscape.
- It will not be washed away by heavy rain.
- It is a weed deterrent.
- It also deters insects.
- It comes in a variety of different colors to suit your pavers and your overall design.
Tips on the use of Polymer Sand for Paver Longevity
If you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the installation of polymeric sand, you are bound to enjoy the benefits the product offers. After the pavers are installed, pour your sand over the top of them, and then carefully sweep it across the surface, ensuring that gaps are filled to roughly ⅛” below the edge of each paver. Remove any excess sand using a soft bristle broom or a leaf blower. Be careful not to get the sand wet at this point.
Once the sand has been even distributed into the gaps between the pavers, to the desired height, you can then lightly wet the entire paved area using your garden hose with a sprinkle head attachment. When the sand gets wet, the binding agent is activated and the pavers will be locked firmly in place.
Once polymeric joints have been created in your paving, you will find that they are not particularly demanding when it comes to maintenance. The sand forms hard, firm joints between the pavers; weeds and insects can’t get through from the bottom, and rainwater can’t get through from above. You may find that one or two joints could fail over time, perhaps due to the ground shifting underneath it. If you should find them, use a screwdriver or similar tool to scrape out the sand (only in the effect joint) and then replace it with fresh polymer sand.
If you are not confident in your own ability to install pavers with polymer sand, it is always best to get the help of a professional paving installer. When applied properly, polymeric sand can last for many years.
